PAIA deadline looming

Section 51 of the Promotion of Access to Information ACT (PAIA) of 2000 stipulates that all private bodies (companies, close corporations, partnerships, trusts and sole proprietors) develop an information manual by 31 August 2005.

The manual must be made available on companies' Web sites, should they have one.

It is, however, shocking to see that the PAIA website itself is still under construction at this late stage.

RECENT CHANGES: BROADBAND, NEWS PORTAL, SECURITY ASSISTANCE, Regular technology focus, Helpful information in letters from readers!

FOCUS AREAS
Our focus  is presently on VoIP broadband.

VOiP

Voice over IP (VOIP) refers to the delivery of voice via public or private networks using Internet Protocol rather than over traditional public switched telephone networks (PSTN). Over time, it proves to be faster and cheaper to implement as well as easier to roll-out new services using this technology, and these facts position it as the perfect communications technology for Africa.

Although the technology is not currently widely available to South African companies or consumers due to regulatory issues, Tim Parsonson, managing director of Storm is confident that this will be resolved within the next 12 months. Read more.....

BROADBAND

Broadband is now a reality in SA, but what is broadband all about and what are the hidden benefits and costs?

Currently Telkom’s HomeDSL 384 service with 2 GB of traffic will cost consumers R 558-00. This is around 15 times (1500%) more expensive than the 256 ADSL offering in India...., read more

Intel produces one chip with two 'brains'
BY REUTERS
[San Francisco | Reuters News Service, 8 February 2005] - Intel on Monday said it had completed initial production runs of a chip with two processors-in-one, setting the stage for mainstream marketing of PCs with two processor "brains."

Intel's Pentium Extreme Edition also will include hyper-threading technology -- a separate technology Intel began offering three years ago. With hyper-threading and dual cores, Intel chips can process four software calculations simultaneously by efficiently using resources that otherwise would sit idle.  The ability to process up to four software "threads" simultaneously gives computers the impression that it has four separate processors with which to process data. Multi-threading increases performance and responsiveness on demanding tasks.More.....

Web Store technologies
Many Web store merchants understandably want to concentrate their energies on what they do best - selling - and either ignore the technical aspects or leave them for someone else to worry about. However, whilst Web store creation software continues to increase in power and ease of use, there is still a requirement for Web merchants to have a sound understanding of the technologies that underpin their stores. This resource takes you "under the hood" to explore the key technologies and explain in a straightforward manner how they are used for Web commerce......  read more.......
